East Sussex County Council are committed to reduce our carbon emissions by 13% per annum & to net-zero by 2050 at the latest, but preferably as soon as possible. It is a very ambitious target given the statutory duties, cost & technology constraints that our council operates within. The County Council's policy can be viewed here:
The Liberal Democrat "net-zero by 2030" motion proposed at Full Council on July 23rd (supported by the Greens) was by their own admission unlikely to be achieved, & carries substantial cost & technology risks to council taxpayers. In my speech (accessible via the link below), I highlight the reasons for supporting the current approach adopted by the County Council in 2020 & rejecting a proposal that appears to owe more to virtue-signalling than it does to seriously engaging with this important challenge.
